Key facts

What happens in the second trimester

This is usually the most comfortable stretch of pregnancy. Your baby grows quickly, starts to move, and can hear sounds. Most women feel more like themselves again as the early symptoms fade.

You might notice:

Milestones and scans

The big one is the anomaly (TIFFA) scan at around 18 to 22 weeks, a detailed check of your baby's development. Towards the end of this trimester, the glucose tolerance test for gestational diabetes is usually done.

What is the anomaly scan?

A detailed ultrasound at around 18 to 22 weeks that checks your baby's organs and growth.

Is back pain normal in the second trimester?

Mild aches are common as your body adjusts. Severe or one-sided pain should be checked.

Can I exercise and travel?

Usually yes, in moderation and with your doctor's okay — the second trimester is often the easiest time to travel.
