Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs on or in the ovary. Most are completely harmless and clear up on their own — but some cause symptoms or need removing, usually by keyhole surgery.
An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac that forms on or inside an ovary. The most common kind — a functional cyst — is simply part of the normal monthly cycle and disappears by itself.
Other types include endometriomas (linked to endometriosis) and dermoid cysts. Most are benign.
Many cysts cause no symptoms at all. When they do, you might notice:
Sudden, severe pelvic pain — especially with nausea or feeling faint — needs urgent attention, as it can mean a cyst has twisted or ruptured. Otherwise, ongoing pain, bloating or a cyst found on a scan should be reviewed calmly and properly.
An ultrasound shows the size and type of cyst. Depending on your age and the cyst's features, a blood test or a repeat scan after a few weeks may be advised to see whether it settles on its own.
Most cysts simply need watching. Treatment is considered when a cyst is large, persistent, causing symptoms or has unusual features:
