Trying to conceive: where to start

Deciding to try for a baby is a big, hopeful step. A few simple things stack the odds in your favour — and it helps to know what's normal before you start to worry.

Trying to conceive: where to start

Key facts

Before you start

A little preparation helps you begin from a healthy place:

How long it usually takes

Conceiving often takes a few months, and that's completely normal. Most healthy couples succeed within six months to a year. Try not to let month-to-month disappointment take over — it's a common, and usually temporary, part of the journey.

Timing matters

Your chances are highest in the fertile window — the few days around ovulation. Regular intercourse (every two to three days) through the cycle is a simple, low-stress way to cover it without turning it into a chore.

It takes two

Fertility isn't only about the woman. A healthy lifestyle for the male partner — and, if needed, a simple semen test — is an equal part of the picture.

When to seek help

Consider seeing a doctor if you've been trying for a year (or six months if you're 35 or older), or sooner if you have irregular or absent periods, known PCOS or endometriosis, or previous pelvic surgery.

Questions, answered

How long should we try before seeing a doctor?

About a year if you're under 35, or six months if you're 35 or older — and sooner if your periods are irregular or you have a known condition.

Does folic acid really help?

Yes — it protects your baby's early development, so it's advised before and during early pregnancy.

How often should we have intercourse?

Every two to three days across the cycle is a simple way to cover the fertile window without pressure.

Does the male partner need checking too?

Often yes. A simple semen analysis is a standard, important part of the assessment.
